History of Irene

Early Settlement: Founded in the late 19th century by Alois Hugo Nellmapius, Irene was named after his daughter.

The settlement began as a farm and dairy.

Agricultural Heritage: Known for its dairy farming, Irene’s legacy lives on at the Irene Dairy Farm, established in 1895.

The Irene Concentration Camp: During the Second Anglo-Boer War, Irene was a site of a British concentration camp,

bearing witness to a tragic chapter in history.
